Soil Vapor Contamination

Soil vapor can become contaminated when chemicals evaporate from underground sources. These chemicals include:

  • Volatile organic compounds (VOCs)

  • Some semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOCs)

  • Certain inorganic substances, such as elemental mercury

Additionally, common subsurface sources of volatile chemicals include:

  • Contaminated soil or groundwater

  • Buried waste

  • Non-aqueous phase liquids (NAPLs)

  • Underground storage tanks or drums

Contaminated soil vapor can enter buildings due to factors like changes in barometric pressure, wind, temperature differences, or exhaust fan-induced depressurization. Once inside, it mixes with indoor air and may impact air quality.
